Top Physio Tips for Cyclists aims to provide you with information on how to prevent problems occurring, in association with this worthwhile charity event. Be Safe!Saftey comes first and foremost. Although they may not be fashionable, helmets prevent head injuries and are ESSENTIAL when cycling on roads, even if they are not busy. Make sure your bike is in good condition with pumped-up tyres and ensure that you feel confident and safe when riding it. Like any sport, you run the risk of becoming dehydrated when cycling so make sure you carry some water with you, particularly on long rides. Furthermore, if you suffer from heart or lung conditions, it may be advisable to discuss with your GP about taking part in cycling events. Prevent Pain!Cycling is repetitive, which means that it commonly leads to niggles and sometimes pain through repeated stresses on soft tissues and joints. To prevent this it is essential that your bike is set up to suit you. Make sure the saddle is comfortable and not positioned too far from the handle bars. If you have to lean forward too far to reach them, this may cause back pain. Knee pain is also a common problem for cyclists and it is important to keep your knees strong if you are a regular cycler. Once again, your bike set up is very important in the prevention of knee problems. Make sure your saddle height is high enough so that when you push one foot all the way to the floor, your knee is still slightly bent. Try not to favour one leg when cycling and try to keep your knees facing forwards when pedalling. Warm up!It is important to remember to warm up before cycling to increase your heart rate and breathing. This will prepare your body for the event. Try to warm-up for at least 15 minutes beforehand by walking or jogging briskly and stretching. This will keep you flexible and prevent cramping particularly on longer rides. Stretch all of your major muscle groups before and after cycling for at least 30 seconds each time. Know your limits!Like any sport, your general fitness will affect your ability to perform. Dont start off too fast as you may tire more quickly. Take your time and enjoy yourself and if necessary, get off and have a walk, particularly when going up hills if you need a rest! It is important to remember that if you feel pain, you may be causing stress to your tissues and it is important to have a rest or adjust your seating position. Most importantly, enjoy yourself! |
